THE WEIRDSTONE OF BRISINGAMEN. A Tale of Alderly. Advance Uncorrected Proof.

London: Collins, 1960. Advance Copy [Uncorrected Proof] of the First Edition. Advance copy (uncorrected proof) in patterned red paper covers, printed paper label on upper cover. [1-10], 11-224 pp. No map endpapers. A few small marks and a touch of wear to the printed title label, small tear at base of spine panel; a very good clean copy. Rare. We are aware of two different states of this proof, one in plain blue marbled wrappers with dust jacket (we acquired and sold one of these in 2009) and this one in red marbled wrappers with printed title label. Our copy in blue marbled wrappers had the two printed maps as integral leaves preceding and following the text, along with a priced dust jacket; no priority is maintained, although we feel that this simpler proof in red wrappers is likely to precede. ¶ The author's first book, a landmark Heroic fantasy novel set in and around Alderley Edge in Cheshire. "Garner is indisputably the great originator, the most important British writer of fantasy since Tolkien, and in many respects better than Tolkien, because deeper and more truthful ... Any country except Britain would have long ago recognised his importance, and celebrated it with postage stamps and statues and street-names. But that's the way with us: our greatest prophets go unnoticed by the politicians and the owners of media empires. I salute him with the most heartfelt respect and admiration." - Philip Pullman, author of the His Dark Materials series.
