THE NIGHT LAND. A Love Tale.

London: Eveleigh Nash, 1912. First Edition (& 1st printing). Octavo, pale red cloth (looks peach) lettered in gilt on spine & front panel, small device in gilt on front cover, decorative borders in blind on front & rear covers. Top & fore-edge trimmed, bottom edge untrimmed. No publisher's catalogue at rear. An issue in deep red cloth with a 16-page publisher's catalogue at the rear is also known; as well as the dark blue cloth presentation bindings done for the author's personal use. We suspect this peach cloth binding is slightly later, but no priority of issue is known. Lower front corner bruised, not affecting the text; light dust-soiling to the cloth, slight darkening to the spine panel. A clean, tight, very good copy. Lovely. Item #314688

"A very long novel, partly science-fiction, partly supernatural fiction, set millions of years in the future. The sun has been dead for ages, and the entire human race... lives in the Great Redoubt, a metal pyramid 8 miles high, with subterranean extensions, and survives by tapping the Earth Current. All around the pyramid, in perpetual darkness... lurk the forces of evil, both incarnate and discarnate. Some are horrible physical monstrsities that rage around dead landscapes, others are potent spiritual forces that try to lure men from the safety of the pyramid... horrors brilliantly concieved." Bleiler, The Guide to Supernatural Fuiction. "As a visionary phantasmagoria it is without parallel." - Barron, Fantasy Literature. "..."one of the most potent pieces of macabre imagination ever written." - H.P. Lovecraft.
