¶ J. Paul Suter was one of the more dynamic and innovative authors to grace the pages of Weird Tales. His early story “Beyond the Door,” appearing in the April 1923 issue, was praised by H. P. Lovecraft. In his tales he exhibited a powerful sense of how the weird can be generated by emotional trauma—domestic conflict, love affairs gone wrong, and the like. Suter, who wrote dozens of mystery and detective stories in his career, often fused the mystery and horror genres, setting up a crime scenario that veers unexpectedly into the weird. In his final contribution to Weird Tales, the novella “The Abyss under the World,” Suter depicts the possible existence of an entire civilization underneath the streets of a major American city, with connections to ancient Egypt. In all his work, Suter employs vivid language, sharp characterization, and careful story construction to create powerful effects of terror and the supernatural.
