¶ History of Colonialization of the NW Pacific Coast from Cook (1778) up to 1812. The discovery of the sea otter population on the West Coast of Vancouver Island initiated the maritime fur trade, and Spain, Britain, Russia and the United States were all interested in killing as many of these cute little puppies as they could, while also wholeheartedly decimating the indigenous tribes of the area. The resources of the land and sea were much too tempting for our fine forefathers, and fair trade was not a consideration. Never forget that what we call progress is really just pure capitalism enforced by military power. In cataloguing a collection of books pertaining to the early history of Canada and the exploitation of the land and its resources one becomes overly familiar with the indigenous peoples of this land being treated as merely speed-bumps on the way to Colonial Power. Truth and Reconciliation are still just useless words when very little is ever done to gift back anything to those from whom lives and culture were stolen.
