Octavo, original green pictorial cloth stamped in dark green and gold. 374 pp., frontispiece with tissue guard, illustrated title page, fifty additional full-page plates, plus binding design, all by Bull. Sheets of the American [L.C. Page] First Edition with a canceled (tipped-in) leaf bearing the Toronto imprint, "Published May, 1902" on verso of title page, "Copp, Clark Co. / Toronto" in gilt at base of spine panel. INSCRIBED BY THE AUTHOR on the dedication leaf "with regards, & memories of a jolly evening - Yours very sincerely, Charles G.D. Roberts / Revelstoke / March 7 / 1927". An earlier non-authorial inscription is on the front free endpaper "Christmas, 1902 / Mabel. With all good wishes / Ethelbert". There is also the early signature "S. Langley". A very nice clean copy, quite fresh and pleasing, Very Good to Near Fine. Item #314386
¶ Charles G.D. Roberts spent the winter of 1926-1927 in Vancouver, lecturing at the University of British Columbia, he left the city during the first week of March 1927, traveling to Toronto. The inscription dated Revelstoke, BC, on March 7th fits in nicely with this timeline. THE KINDRED OF THE WILD was an immensely popular book, a collection of animal stories which went through dozens of printings in as many years.
