¶ Marius Barbeau's monumental work on Haida Argillite Carvings. Barbeau joined the National Museum in 1911 (then part of the Geological Survey of Canada) as an anthropologist; Katherine Capes joined the National Museum in 1949 and a great deal of her research dealt with Marius's work and the collections that he created. Katherine was from the Comox Valley, was a founding member of the Courtenay and District Historical Society and one of the first female anthrpologists in Canada and an avid preservationist of both cultural and natural heritage.
