¶ A fine reproduction of a manuscript grimoire. Ebenezer Sibley wrote the original manuscript c.1800, translating it from a French version but also writing many additions, including a preface and the talisman designs. The text is entirely different from the Key of Solomon as translated and published by McGregor Mathers. The occult bookseller John Denly (who appears as 'Mr. D.' in Bulwer Lytton’s novel ZANONI) obtained many magical texts from the estate of Ebenezer Sibley. Frederick Hockley, who was working for Denly, made manuscript copies of these and other texts.

The collection here published collects eight idependent texts. THE CLAVIS... contains clear and systematic instructions for constructing magical tools and pentacles for many magical purposes. THE MYSTERIOUS RINGgives directions for preparing magic rings. AN EXPERIMENT OF THE SPIRIT BIRTO; AN EXPERIMENT OF THE SPIRIT VASSAGO; AN EXPERIMENT OF THE SPIRIT AGARES; & AN EXPERIMENT OF THE SPIRIT BEALPHORAS show how to call upon angels and spirits, and crystal scrying; THE WHEEL OF WISDOM gives concise directions for using celestial harmonies. The final text, THE COMPLETE BOOK OF MAGIC SCIENCE, is closely akin tothe SECRET GRIMOIRE OF TURIEL, but more complete - Hockley claimed authorship himself, based on a variety of sources.

The manuscripts here reproduced are the same that were issued in a very limited edition facsimile volume by The Society for Esoteric Endeavour, aside from the final work, THE COMPLETE BOOK OF MAGIC SCIENCE, , which was note included in their version of THE CLAVIS... It was, however, published in a limited edition by Teitan Press in 2008.

It should be noted that both Sibley and Hockley were major inspirations in the occult revival of the past two centuries, influencing A.E. Waite, S.L. Mathers, W. Wynn Westcott, & Aleister Crowley, as well as the Golden Dawn, Rosicrucian, and Masonic movements.
