¶ The last book by this great and renowned author, a short novel and a major tour-de-force. Partially autobiographical, it deals with what might be called the 'Silurian Hypothesis' - the idea that another intelligent species existed on earth before humans evolved. Evidence is slowly uncovered to prove this hypothesis, as we travel nostalgically through the Sixties and Seventies, spending a lot of time hanging out in used bookshops, listening to psychedelic music and investigating the occult. Along the way we meet characters who are (and are not) Austin Osman Spare (Alphonsus Gaunt), Aleister Crowley (Nicholas Hallam), Dennis Wheatley (Hector Campion) and many others. Highly recommended on many levels.
