Supernatural and mystical novel, partially autobiographical. Lucian Taylor, son of a Welsh country parson, is gifted with literary ability but cursed with a hypersensitiity which makes intolerable to him the cruelties and coarseness of life. He withdraws within himself, studies the magical writers of the past, practices mental disciplines and self-inflicts pain until he gains t he ability of the spiritual alchemist, transmuting life around him to gold. He has visions of Wales as it was in Roman times. When he goes to London to write the perfect book, he experiences London as a Demonic and Dionysian bedlam. After a glorious bacchanal he is found dead by his landlady, a bottle of laudanum nearby. Considered by many to be the author's greatest work.
