First American Edition. Octavo, publisher's original dark blue (looks like black) cloth titled in gilt on front panel, titled and ruled in gilt on spine. Pictorial endpapers (different at front & rear, each 2-page spread depicting 11 of the tarot trump cards, so that the whole set of 22 trumps is shown). 268 pp. The Preface by William Lindsay Gresham appears first here in the American edition, it was not present in the earlier UK edition. Gresham Also wrote the noir classic NIGHTMARE ALLEY that features a different Major Arcana card for each of its 22 chapters. Gresham's wife, the poet Joy Davidman Gresham, later married C.S. Lewis after divorcing Gresham. A FINE COPY, lacking the original printed dust jacket.
