Octavo, original dark green cloth titled in gilt on front panel, the spine lettering is in green - the second issue binding. 410 pp, frontispiece portrait plus seven additional full-page plates. Index at rear. Small, neat bookplate "Ex Libris John Ruyle" on inner front cover, Page edges dusty, some mild foxing, spine panel lettering dull; a very good copy. John Ruyle has made small notes in pencil on the front endpaper and identifies this is the "first binding, spine titled in gilt". Unless I am mistaken and the gilt has heavily tarnished, his eyes were deceiving him, this looks like the second issue binding to me. Overall, a very nice copy.
¶ A collection of biographical memoirs and essays by Doyle. This American edition includes a number of changes not in the first edition (Hodder & Stoughton, 1924), including an Index and the rewriting of several chapters, including Chapter XI, "Sidelights on Sherlock Holmes", in which "The Adventure of The Two Collaborators", a Sherlock Holmes pastiche created by Doyle's friend and fellow author J.M. Barrie, makes its first appearance in print.
