First American Edition, Second Printing. Octavo, original maroon buckram titled and decorated in silver and gilt, light brown coated endpapers. 336 + [8] pp ads at rear. the first American edition was issued by Appleton in March, 1899 in an edition of 1,500 copies; this second printing (of 5,000 copies) was issued later the same year. It is identified by the ads; pp [ii] has a list of six works by Doyle (the 1st issue was 19 titles) and pp [337] has an ad for GILBERT PARKER'S BEST BOOKS. See Green & Gibson, A24d. Spine a trifle dull, cloth at spine tips looks like it's going to start fraying if you look at it the wrong way; a very good, sound and clean copy.

Oversized and sets are shipped at cost by whatever method you choose at the time of your order. Excessive shipping amounts will be quoted prior to processing an order.
For International orders, we will always use the least expensive form of Air Mail shipping, and we will notify the customer of any shipping costs which are excessive.

For time-sensitive orders or particularly valuable items, we can always ship Express at cost.
