Two Volumes. Octavo, original green cloth decorated with an elephant design in black and blind on upper cover, other animal designs in black on spine, tiger design on rear panel; titles in gilt, top edges gilt. 303 + 324 pp. Illustrated throughout. Ink name on front endpaper of Vol One "Abby F. Vaughan, March 31st, 1900", small bookseller's ticket on rear paste-down "M.S. Smith & Sons, Books, Pictures, Games, 1154-1158 Broadway, Oakland, Cal". Volume Two has a small (tiny!) ink inscription on the front endpaper "C.V. Marshall, Xmas 1898, From A.H.B." Otherwise, and overall, a very good, bright and tidy set.
¶ Originally published in 1894-95, THE JUNGLE BOOK is a classic collection of anthropomorphic animal stories with moral lessons. Adapted many time for the screen, this is an early appearance in their original American Editions.
