Originally published in german in 1962. The murder of a Polish prostitute would not normally have aroused much attention in German-occupied Warsaw in 1942. But this crime was unique in that all the evidence pointed to a German general as the murderer. In fact one of three generals. Then again a similar crime was committed in Paris in 1944 with the same three generals as suspects. The case was not proven and in 1956 a third murder occurred in Dresden. This time justice was going to be served. Basis for the 1966 Horizon Pictures film of the same title, directed by Anatole Litvak and starring Peter O'Toole, Omar Sharif, Tom Courtenay, Donald Pleasence, and Christopher Plummer.
