Description

Thick square octavo. Original dark green cloth titled in gold on spine panel. 501 pp., glossary. With 16 full-page colour plates printed on glossy paper stock, several full-page black & white plates, plus numerous head- and tail- pieces, line drawings & decorative initials totaling to 70 black & white drawings, all by Rackham. Front endpaper a trifle marked from the removal of an older bookplate, but not badly. Overall, a very good, bright copy in dust jacket.

Comments

One of Rackham's greatest works. When thinking of Arthur Rackham one usually turns first to his 'work in Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens', or his 'Alice in Wonderland'; next, perhaps his illustrations for 'Grimm's Fairy tales' or 'Undine' stand out. But his work for on the Malory, one of the great epics of the English language, is of very high calibre, and the numerous black & white decorations throughout the text - some with a touch of whimsy, others with a touch of Beardsley - show a fine attention to detail which was not included in many of Rackham's later works.
