First printing of the Photoplay edition. Octavo, original red cloth stamped in black and brown. 310 pp + [10] pp publisher's ads at rear. Frontispiece and seven additional full-page black & white plates from the 1929 First National Pictures film starring Thelma Todd, once considered a 'lost film'; a print is now known to survive, but it lacks the soundtrack. The copyright page of this edition states that it is the third Boni & Liveright edition, this does not pertain to this Grosset & Dunlap edition which was reproduced from the plates of the third printing. A nearly fine copy, lacking the rare dust jacket.

Comments

Fantastic Adventure novel of a master-criminal named Satan who enslaves an American explorer and his sweetheart. "Weird mystery novel that is not strictly a fantasy, the Satan of the title being a super-villian something after the style of Fu Manchu" - Locke. A Spectrum of Fantasy (1980).
