Description

Two volumes. 12mo, original plain paper wrappers over limp boards with lacing showing. 297 + 322 pp. Small, neat stamps on title leaves, old paper labels at base of spines (one partially perished). Slight loss to upper corner of final leaf of text and free endpaper of Vol 1 (as issued, a slight printing error); otherwise a nearly fine, bright set. A wonderful set, & a rare survival of a beautiful and simple 18th Century publisher's binding.

Comments

The Decameron, known also as the Book of Prince Galehaut, is a 14th-century medieval allegory by Giovanni Boccaccio, told as a frame story encompassing 100 tales by ten young people. Boccaccio probably began composing the work in 1350, and finished it in 1351 or 1353. The various tales of love in The Decameron range from the erotic to the tragic. Tales of wit, practical jokes, and life lessons contribute to the mosaic. In addition to its literary import, it documents life in 14th-century Italy.
