First American edition. Octavo, original dark blue pictorial cloth stamped in gold, red and silver on spine and front cover, brown coated endpapers. 328 pp + 8 pp publishers catalogue at rear. Frontispiece with tissue guard, numerous (well, 119) additional illustrations in the text, many full-page. Light shelf-wear to lower edges with some show-through of the boards, spine tips lightly rubbed; a very good copy, with the small ownership label of John Ruyle on the verso of the front free endpaper.
