HARRY POTTER AND THE SORCERER'S STONE. First American Book Club Edition.

[New York]: Arthur A. Levine Books / An Imprint of Scholastic Press. [1998] [i.e, 1999]. First American Book Club Edition. Octavo, original black boards with with burgundy spine lettered in gilt. 309 pp. The book conforms entirely with the description of the first printing of the US book club edition, item A4(c) in Philip Errington's bibliography of J.K. Rowling, but the jacket is slightly later: Errington calls for a dust jacket priced at $17.95 on the inside upper flap, and this dust jacket, is unpriced and unclipped. The notation "Year 1" is present at the head of the spine panel under the author's name. The true first American Edition was issued in October 1998 in a dust jacket priced at $16.95. A fine copy in a fine dust jacket. * VIRTUALLY PRISTINE INSIDE AND OUT *. Item #312846

¶ The first Harry Potter book, originally issued in the UK by Bloomsbury in 1997. Arthur A. Levine bought the US publication rights long before the Harry Potter craze took off in the UK, but it was these early American editions which marked a significant turning point in the book's history.
