¶ Contains an extensive "Preface to the English Translation" by A.E. Waite. 'Papus' was the pseudonym of Dr. Gérard Encausse [1865-1916], the French author and founder of the Martinist Order. This work was originally published as 'Clef de la Science Occulte' [Key to Occult Science] in 1889, and the English translation was issued in 1892. The Second edition, with the new material added by A.E. Waite, was issued in 1910 and 1914. It was also reprinted in 1919 in larger format in purple cloth, and again in 1929, also in larger format but with the wording on the title page revised to read "Third Edition, Revised". These 'Third Editions' are in fact identical to the Second editions but the "Preface to the French Edition" is omitted (as here - it is listed on the contents page but is not printed in the book). Contents include: Preface; Introduction to the Study of the Tarot; The Sacred Word Yod-He-Vau-He; Esotericism of Numbers; Analogy Between the Sacred Word and Numbers; The Key to the Minor Arcana; The Key to the Major Arcana; Connection Between the Major and Minor Arcana: General Affinities; Introduction to the Study of Symbolism; History of the Symbolism of the Tarot; The Symbolical Tarot; Second Septenary; Third Septenary; General Transition; General Key to the Applications of the Tarot; The Astronomical Tarot; The Initiative Tarot; The Divining Tarot; etc., etc. Translated from the French by A.P. Morton.
