Sauk City: Arkham House. 2010. First Hardcover Edition. Two Volumes. Octavo, original black cloth, gilt titles on spines, small vignettes in gilt on upper covers, all edges trimmed. 102+102+102+102+102+102+102+130 pp, the page numbering from the original paperbound issues is maintained, the original covers are reproduced in colour. Issued in a limited edition of only 250 sets. A fine set, without dust jackets, as issued. At 250 copies this is actually one of the smallest print runs of any Arkham House title. The rare poetry books books of the 1950's - Robert E. Howard's ALWAYS COMES EVENING, Clark ashton Smith's THE DARK CHATEAU & SPELLS AND PHILTRES, and Leah Bodine Drake's A HORNBOOK FOR WITCHES all had print runs of around 500-600 copies. Item #311946

¶ A short lived, but important periodical. In addition to printing first appearances of fiction by Ray Bradbury, H. P. Lovecraft, Clark Ashton Smith, Robert Bloch, Theodore Sturgeon, A. E. van Vogt and many others, the magazine published essays, criticism, memoirs and book reviews. One issue was devoted to science fiction. The final issue includes an index. The original issues were very fragile and are very difficult to locate in superior condition; this first hardcover edition is very desirable and sought-after.
