¶ Sensational supernatural novel based upon a local legend which was recorded in Harland & Wilkinson's LANCASHIRE LEGENDS (1873) as ""Bernshaw Tower and Lady Sybil". A woman desiring worldly power studies traditional witchcraft and makes a pact with the devil. A review in 'The Publisher's Circular', No. 1491' (Jan 26, 1895) praises the novel: "Although produced in the style of the 'shilling shocker,' Mr. Clarke's story is a very long way above the average railway bookstall story."
