FAR OFF THINGS.

London: Martin Secker, [1922]. First Trade Edition. Octavo, original light green cloth titled in gilt on spine panel, top page edges trimmed and stained green. [160] pp. Issued in September, 1922, one month after the Signed Limited Edition of 100 copies; the American Edition (Knopf) was also issued in August. Spine panel faded to brown; light wear at edges, cloth a bit bubbled and with a few small stains. Formerly, Machen biographer John Gawsworth's copy, inscribed by him on the front free endpaper "Ink blot p. 99 an accident while preparing my biography! John Gawsworth 24. Sept 1933." There is, indeed, a small ink blot on page 99. A sound, very good copy with an excellent association. Goldstone & Sweetser 20c. Item #311818

¶ The first volume of Machen's autobiographical reminiscences, followed by 'Things Near and Far' (1923). Terence Ian Fytton Armstrong (a.k.a. John Gawsworth) was a friend of Machen's and many other contemporary authors, he succeeded M.P. Shiel to the throne of the Kingdom of Redonda upon Shiel's death in 1947. Gawsworth's longest piece of written work was a biography of Machen, but he could find no publisher for it in the 1930's. It was finally published by Tartarus Press in 2005.
