Octavo, original full brown buckram over beveled boards with oval cameo portrait of Herodotus in ivory linen to front board and gilt-lettered ivory linen panel to spine, top edges gilt, map endpapers. 615 pp., Index at rear. Illustrated throughout by Edward Bawden with 10 double-page color spreads and numerous pen-and-ink drawings. A fine copy in a near fine slipcase, one small stain to base of rear spine on the slipcase. Uncommon in condition, the brown cloth spine tends to fade, this copy shows no sign of that.
