¶ Paradise Lost was first published in ten books in 1667. The author later revised and augmented the work, which was published in twelve books in 1674 by S. Simmons. It is this version which is reproduced here, from the Cambridge University Press edition, edited by William Aldis Wright and published in 1903. The Introduction is a substantially revised version of John Wain's essay 'Strength and Isolation', first published in The Living Milton. ed Frank Kermode, 1960.
