London: George Newnes, 1894. First Edition. Hardcover. The first appearance in print. Large crown octavo. Original publisher's decorated blue cloth over bevelled boards, spine panel titled in black & gold, front panel decorated in black, decorated endpapers. Contains the short story THE EAGLE'S CRAG by Shiel, pp 308-316, Illustrated by A. Pearse. Formerly, Terence Ian Fytton Armstrong (a.k.a. John Gawsworth)'s copy, with the Realm of Redonda bookplate on the front free endpaper, and a note by Gawsworth on the first blank leaf stating "Page 308, first text, uncollected in book form / JG". Beneath this he has written at a later date "Revised text published in The Invisible Voices 1935". Of several noted variants of issues of The Strand Magazine, this issue is on slightly cheaper paper, has speckled page edges (some issues have gilt edges) and floral endpapers (some had plain endpapers); as well, this issue has no publisher's title leaf or Index at rear (although it was issued thus, and they have not been removed from this copy). A bright, clean, very good copy. Very Good. Item #311507
