¶ Historical novel of witchcraft & black magic set in seventeenth century Scotland. According to Ronald Hutton (in THE TRIUMPH OF THE MOON: A History of Modern Pagan Witchcraft, 1999), the work was based upon the Witch-cult hypothesis as laid out by the anthropologist Margaret Murray in THE WITCH-CULT IN WESTERN EUROPE (1921).
