FEMMES DAMNEÉS. THREE-PAGE TYPED MANUSCRIPT, WITH CORRECTIONS BY HAND.

Undated, but circa 1925-1929. Typed on three sheets of plain 8 1/2 x 11-inch paper. Unsigned, but perhaps this is because the piece is a translation of FEMMES DAMNEÉS: DELPHINE ET HIPPOLYTE from Charles Baudelaire's FLEURS DU MAL [1857]. Three Pages, approximately 900 words, 5 corrections by hand. Paper browned, folded, a fine example. Item #311173

FEMMES DAMNEÉS: DELPHINE ET HIPPOLYTE appeared in the 1857 First Edition of FLEURS DU MAL, but it was one of the censored poems that was removed from the 1861 edition. Smith's translation. which is in prose poem format rather than the verse of the original, was not published until it appeared in THE COMPLETE POETRY AND TRANSLATIONS, Volume 3: The Flowers of Evil and Others (NY: Hippocampus Press, 2007).
