¶ The Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam is Edward FitzGerald's translation of a selection of poems, originally written in Persian and numbering about a thousand, attributed to Omar Khayyam (1048–1131), a Persian poet, mathematician and astronomer. Famous in many ways, the Rubaiyat is the source of the well-know phrases 'The moving finger, having writ, moves on' and 'A glass of wine, a loaf of bread, and thou". The work was extremely popular in the late 19th & early 20th centuries, and the task of illustrating it appealed to a many of the world's greatest illustrators, including Willy Pogany, who did some of his finest work for this text.
