¶ Lost race novel. An ancient race of Caucasian origin in a mysterious city in an unexplored region south of Algiers, in a waterless region known as the "Sands of Death". Formerly, John Ruyle's copy, with his extensive notes in pencil on the front free endpaper. John suggests that this is the first hardcover edition; as the contemporary (1897) Neely edition was likely issued in wrappers; he also suggests that these are the sheets from the Neely edition. Stuart Teitler's copy in his extensive American Lost Race collection was also this Hobart edition.
