London: Chatto & Windus, 1901. Second Edition. Hardcover. "Second Edition", so stated on the title page. Octavo, original pictorial orange cloth titled in black with a design of a man in black and the purple cloud in purple, the cloud extending onto the spine panel which is titled in gilt. Title page printed in red & black. 463 pp + pp catalogue of "Chatto & Windus's Cheap Popular Novels" at rear. The verso of the half-title leaf prints "Opinions of the Press upon THE PURPLE CLOUD". The binding design is similar but not identical to the First Edition printed slightly earlier in 1901; this may in fact be the first edition sheets bound up with new preliminaries and a different catalogue inserted at the rear. Spine tips lightly rolled, small pen mark on top page edges, corners with minute bumps and some very slight rubbing to the cloth; a bright, clean, very good copy. This issue is exceedingly scarce and rarely encountered. Very Good. Item #311498
