LORD DUNSANY AND THE PORTRAIT PAINTING OF THE DUKE OF WELLINGTON].

1905. Loose Letters. TLS [ Typed Letter Signed] from F.G. Ogilvie to Messrs. Johnsons, Long & Co., March 18, 1905. Signed typed cover letter on "Board of Education, South Kensington, London" letterhead with seven unsigned typed "copy" letters, attached together by a small loop of string in their upper left corners. The cover letter has a pen line in its left margin and holograph initials on its lower left corner. Each copy letter has "E.R." embossed on the upper left corner and holograph initials on the lower left corner. Eight sheets with three horizontal folds, light fold and edge wear, few corner bends, occasional stains. "I am directed to forward for your information a copy of the correspondence which has passed between the Board of Education, Lord Dunsany, and Messrs. Preston and Francis, the solicitors for the Dowager Lady Dunsany, with respect to a portrait painting of the Duke of Wellington now on loan to the [Victoria and Albert] Museum." These letters have been forwarded in an attempt to confirm the ownership of the painting, which the 17th Lord Dunsany lent to the museum years ago, as it is need of repair. Initially it was assumed to have belonged to the current Lord Dunsany - Edward Plunkett, 18th Baron of Dunsany, who writes that he knows nothing about it; but they may continue to exhibit it if they wished. The painting; however, may belong to his mother, the Dowager Lady Dunsany, whose lawyers wish to assert her rights to withdraw it at any time. Ogilvie is therefore contacting "Messrs. Johnsons, Long & Co.", the late 17th Lord Dunsany's lawyers, for clarification of ownership. Very Good. Item #310909
