First edition. The correct first printing, printed by Wolff and with the publisher's monogram on the copyright page. [1014] pp. Thick octavo, original beige cloth stamped in black and gold. Pictorial (map) end papers by Robert Graves. Introduction by Leonard Bacon. A nearly fine copy in a slightly worn dust jacket which has a few small scratches, fraying and small closed tears at the spine tips, and a thumbnail-sized chip from head of spine panel. The dust wrapper is the correct first issue, priced at $3.00 and with no reprinting statement (reprints designate their status on the front flap). A well above average copy of a thick and heavy volume which tends to survive in poor condition.

A fully imagined Utopian world with its own history, literature, culture and politics . One of the classics of 20th Century fantasy.
