First edition. Octavo, original green cloth titled in gilt on spine and front panel. 343 pp + [8] pp publisher's ads at rear, dated Autumn, 1898. Heraldic bookplate on front paste-down, inner hinges neatly repaired, a few small marks to the cloth and slight tanning to the spine panel, a very good copy. The text of the British edition varies from that of the later American edition (Dodd Mead, 1899). ¶ Fantasy novel of a magic stone & sinister orientals. Hind was editor of THE STUDIO magazine, and a portion of this novel first appeared in THE YELLOW BOOK, No. 8, January 1896 issue.
