1 MERRYN, Anthony. FREE WILL I BE. A Novel.
London: Philip Allan. 1932. First Edition, First Printing. Hardcover Fine in Dust Jacket
First edition. Octavo, original green cloth titled & ruled in black on spine panel, bordered in blind on upper cover. 317 pp. Touch of foxing to page edges, slight discoloration to endpapers otherwise a fine bright copy in a fine dust jacket. A remarkably nice copy. ¶ "The central figure of Mr. Merryn's well written romance is typical of many a young man who has been forced by adverse circumstances into an uncongenial role in life. In short, the old story of the square peg in the round hole. However, Luke Roydon has courage and sufficient resolution to break free from his shackles, and acting on the advice of a mysterious and attractive young woman whom he meets in the house of an eccentric poet, he throws up his job in the city and betakes himself, together with his painting paraphernalia, to an artists' colony in Cornwall. And although Luke speedily realises that his very mediocre talent as a painter is not likely to carry him far, and that a return to London and a city office is inevitable in his case, he also feels that the experience has not been in vain, and that his brief sojourn at Porth Lanherne has opened for him a new window in the house of life. Especially good are Mr. Merryn's descriptions of the artistic fraternity of Porth Lanherne and of Luke's homely friendship with the gentle-hearted Lamorna and her father, old Trevarrack. But disillusionment comes when he finds that the beautiful Daphne Undercroft, who was responsible for his Cornish adventure, is no better than she should be." - from a contemporary review in THE WEST AUSTRALIAN, April 23, 1932.
